Judo is an Olympic sport and a martial art descended from Japanese jiu-jitsu. Developed by Jigaro Kano, judo has spread world wide. It has a wide range of appeal for recreation, sport, fitness, self-defence and personal development.
Primarily based on throwing and grappling techniques, judo also includes arm lock, choking and other techniques taught only in advanced level kata. Potentially dangerous techniques are not permitted in randori (free-style practice) and shiai (competition).
