Fudoshin Judo Club was formerly the Memorial University of Newfoundland Judo Club founded in 1968 by Dr. Yves Le Gal. The club has operated for over 50 years and introduced thousands of Newfoundlanders to the sport of judo! The club name changed in 2018 to mark our club's change from a university based sport club to the community based judo club that we are today. Our training takes place at the St. John's Martial Arts Centre and offers classes for children, teens and adults.
Our club is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association and Judo Canada. Our programs offer something for anyone interested in judo for recreation, competition, physical fitness or personal development.
Our club name "Fudoshin" reflects our commitment to personal development as an important aspect of our club programs. Fudoshinis a state of equanimity or imperturbability (literally and metaphorically, "immovable mind", "immovable heart" or "unmoving heart"). It is a philosophical or mental dimension to Japanese martial arts which contributes to the effectiveness of the advanced practitioner.
